Simple styling with a pebble…

Never underestimate the power of something as simple as a pebble when looking at items you may already own, or some treasure you can pick up for free, when you want to re-style your home (or even a bathroom shelf!)

It really is, simple….collect a few things that work well in terms of size, colour and suitability;  then practise arranging them.  It might not be perfect immediately, but one of the best ways to see what works, is to take a picture of it.  You will soon see from a photo image, what your eye can’t directly (or won’t).

So, if you fancy a spruce up of your bathroom shelf and want to make it look as though you have spent time and money creating a fabulously styled area, you will be surprised just how easy it can be by following a few easy steps:

·       Delve around your home, to find something you already have that could work in the space (so, for a bathroom, it could be an old soap you had as a present, or shells you might have kept from a beach holiday).

·       If you live near a coast, you can easily find a washed-out piece of wood or stick, an eroded glass segment, even a little pebble with an ancient fossil is not beyond possibility.

·       Find an old plate, old chopping board, or even a washed-up coconut shell or similar, for placing your collection in.

From there, arrange and style you hoard into a fun design – keep changing it around until it looks stylish and to your liking.

Remember, take photos along the way.   You can add to it or take items out, that don’t work.

Some other little tips:

·       Symmetry is not always desirable.

·       Style items in odd numbers – groupings of 3’s, 5’s etc…  or just slightly off-centre.  This type of setting, creates interest and leads the eye subtly around the design.

·       Built up, so don’t be afraid of putting things on top of each other to create height where possible.

Don’t ever feel that as trained designers, we always get it right first time.

The trick is, to have a go – it’s fun.
